"Britax Boulevard: Built Like a Tank, but one MAJOR Flaw..." 2010-01-19
    By jambrose (Boston, MA)
I'm amazed that this seat has not been recalled. The strap tightening mechanism frequently jams as the steel bracket (connecting all the straps) behind the seat twists and gets snagged on the plastic frame of the seat. When this happens, the seat is completely disabled and straps cannot be tightened around your child. This requires complete removal of the car seat from the car to fix -- a total nightmare when standing in the rain/snow with 35lb screaming 2-year old in your hands. Once you know how to fix the seat it can be done rather quickly; however, I DREAD the frantic calls I receive from my wife when the seat strands her and my son in some remote shopping center parking lot.

It's a shame because the build quality of this seat is otherwise outstanding, and when the straps work I have no doubt this is one of the safest seats on the market. I would still recommend the seat if you're the type of person (and I hope you're not) that drives a mini/hybrid/hatch-back car with kids in the back -- this seat can clearly take a hit.

I also own a Roundabout seat that operates flawlessly, and highly recommend that seat for ease of use. However, I doubt the Roundabout can take a hit as well as the Boulevard. Thus, we put the Roundabout in my wife's SUV and I have the Boulevard in my Accord.

Hope you find this review helpfull; it's been on my mind for awhile...

    Good luck & Cheers!

    Jer

     "Disappointed" 2010-01-12
    By Book Smart (Buffalo, NY)
I researched a ton of car seats and settled upon this one after reading many glowing customer reviews, consumer report reviews, and Baby Bargain reviews.

Here are the good things about this very expensive car seat:

    1. The best thing about this car seat is its safety rating.

    2. The head support/security is great, plus it gives our little one a place to rest her head. I was worried she would not be able to see out the window b/c the head support would be in her way, but she can easily look out the window.

    3. The car seat also comes in many cool cover patterns.

    The bad things:

    1. The "no twist" straps get REALLY twisted and are hard to untwist. This is really annoying and I find that it is a safety issue b/c sometimes the twisted straps do not allow us to tighten the straps appropriately.

    2. The strap between the child's legs is short, so sometimes it is hard to connect the harness. It is not hard in warm weather, but in cold weather when our child is bundled up, it is really difficult and very frustrating.

We need to buy a car seat for child #2. We will not be purchasing another Britax b/c of the strap issues. It's too bad-- I had such high hopes for this very expensive car seat.

     "Compared to the Roundabout" 2009-12-31
    By C. Langlois
I bought this car seat because my 2 year old son is outgrowing his Britax Roundabout, which we LOVE (have 2 - one for each car, and NO complaints). His shoulders are AT the top slot of the Roundabout, and since their shoulders are supposed to be at or below the straps when forward facing, I thought I should look into a bigger seat. Since the Boulevard is supposed to be for children up to 49 inches and 65 pounds, I thought my 39 inch, 37 pound 2 year old would have room to grown in the Boulevard (the Roundabout is for kids up to 40 inches and 40 pounds, so it makes sense that he is almost too big for that). Well, I was very unhappy to find that the highest slot position in the Boulevard (with the headrest all the way to the highest position with the straps as far out as possible) is only one inch higher than the Roundabout. There is NO way this seat could possibly hold my son until he is 49 inches (unless of course the only place he grows is in his legs - if his trunk gets any longer, this seat won't work because the straps will be below his shoulder level). When I called Britax they said I should have measured his seated shoulder height first - I have 3 children and have used MANY car seats but never heard of such a thing, but maybe I'm ignorant. I didn't see any mention of shoulder height in the product description either. The only things that are mentioned are height and weight. My second problem has to do with installation in my Ford Expedition. The latch system is different than in the Roundabout, and it's supposed to be above a certain line when forward facing. Both my husband and I found it impossible to tighten the seat so the latch was above the line. We could tighten the seat, but the latch was not in the recommended location. We had the same problem in my mini-van. Britax was not able to help us over the phone. We will have to pay about $65 to ship this seat back - it simply won't work for us. Very disappointed.

"We Have Two, Like Them A Lot" 2009-12-15
    By Elizabeth (United States)
I spent quite some time researching car seats for our son. In short, this seat was great, we loved it and ordered another one after using it for a month or so, so that there would be one for each car. If you want all the details of why we liked or did not like it, read on.

As an infant our son used the Graco Snug Ride, which was convenient because we could get him in and out of the car easily and not wake him up while he was sleeping. But after using this one once he outgrew the Graco, at age four months (he was a tall baby), I wished we would have used this all along, even as a newborn. We tethered it to the front seat (so it is facing backward, hooked in by LATCH and tether) and it feels sooooo much more sturdy than the Snug Ride for babies. The little flaps on the side make it nice and snug even for small infants (although not preemies).

    Things we like:

-Mostly, that based on research and how it seems to us, it appears to be one of the safest seats. It feels sturdy, feels like there is lots of padding, and also like it is snug. I know, of course, how it feels doesn't mean it is the safest, but to a certain extent (after the feel of the Snug Ride), I think there is something to it. I think there is a good reason that this has the reputation as the safest seat.

-I like the rubber things on the straps. It helps you make sure it is tight enough, fitting well, and straight.

-Five point harness is a plus.

-Our boy can ride in this thing until he is ready to go to a regular seat. It goes up to 65 pounds, so no need to buy booster seats.

-You don't have to rethread to change the height of the straps - thus, can adjust when coat or outfit is more or less bulky.

    Things we like less:

-This is not a small seat. It does fit in our subcompact and compact car, so that is great (goes in the middle in back, rear facing). However, my husband, who is a shorter guy, can't put his seat back as far as he would like while driving. If a taller person is driving, it might be a tight fit in a subcompact or compact car. I'm not sure how it would work if we have to fit two re-facing seats in the car if/when we have another little one. So for small cars, it is a bit of a tight fit in the middle and not sure it would fit on either side.

-Sometimes it is hard to loosen or tighten the straps evenly without having to make them both completely loose and then retighten completely. Not a big deal for me, but if you aren't careful, one side can be quite tight and the other loose and then if there would be an accident, the child wouldn't be properly constrained. Just something to keep an eye on.

    Overall, though A+.

"Not a good buy for the money" 2009-12-06
    By Chris (Minneapolis, MN)
After struggling with these seats (we have twins) for 2 years now, I have to say there are design flaws I did not expect in a seat so expensive. The two main problems we've faced are the latches, which are set back, hard to get out from under the seated child, and which do not latch well at all, requiring both tongs and great pressure to set. The other problem occurs with the adjustable straps, as they constantly get caught somewhere in the inner workings of the seat, and even when working, take a great force to pull the slack. For the money, I am frustrated and disappointed. As noted, these seats are two years old now and these problems may have been fixed by now.

"How does it perform in a car crash..." 2010-02-17
    By David Norman
There are kwirks to this car seat. One, for example, is that the buckle is way up, snug in the crotch. It looks like it would probably make a boy uncomfortable. However, my 1yr old girl was buckled into this seat, rear-facing using LATCH during a ~40mph accident and is fine.

I think the result speaks for itself.

One note that someone else mentioned - if you regularly use the tensioning feature to loosen and re-tighten the belt, don't trust the clicking noise that's supposed to signify that it is snug. I very frequently found that it would click when the belt was obviously flapping around, very loose. Use your brain and *check* the tension after it clicks. Just because it clicks doesn't mean you can't cinch it down more.

I'll be replacing this seat with an Advocate CS.

"Great seat, but I don't trust CS to gauge accurate tension" 2009-12-25
    By Donald Williams (Chicago, IL)
Overall, this is an excellent car seat and we're glad we chose it. We chose Britax because they continue to be a leader in child safety (we did considerable research). And we chose this specific model because of the superior side impact protection. However, I don't find the Click & Safe (CS) feature of this seat worth the extra money over the standard model. An overview of pros and cons as I see them:

    PROS

    * Superior protection/safety

    * Well designed seat

    * Easy installation - the directions are attached to the seat so you can't lose them and are easy to follow

    * Durable fabric used

    * Decent padding for child's comfort

    * Strap height very easy to adjust as child grows

    * Easy to buckle and unbuckle - easy in/out for the child

    * The cowmooflage pattern is pretty cool (and works for both boys and girls)

    CONS

    * CS feature doesn't seem accurate - this is the biggest con. After buckling the child in, you pull the strap to create the right amount of tension on the 5-point harness. The CS feature is supposed to click when you have the straps tight enough. However, our seat clicks while there is still too much give (over an inch) in the shoulder straps, and is even less accurate when she's wearing a winter coat. Straps should be snug (not tight) to the body. If we were to stop when the seat clicked, the straps would be too loose. In my opinion, the CS feature is not worth the extra money.

    * The straps sometimes get twisted in the harness buckle and it takes a couple minutes to straighten them out (not a big issue).

    * Price is higher than a lot of competing brands, but Britax is a leader in safety.

"Don't Pay Extra for the Click and Safe Feature" 2009-12-15
    By Roo 2010 (Chicago)
We've had this car seat for about 8 months now for my 16 month old daughter. Save a few bucks and buy the regular Boulevard. The Click and Safe feature does not work. I'm surprised this seat hasn't been recalled because if you actually relied on when the seat clicks to tell you when the belts are tight enough, you'd be leaving your child dangerously unsecured. The problem appears to get worse with the cold. The belts do not tighten freely now that it's winter. I have to stand up in the car and pull multiple times with all my might to get them secured listening to click after click the whole time (and no, the belts aren't twisted).

In general the seat is nice with the exception of the belts not tightening in cold weather but difficult belts are a huge pet peeve of mine so it probably bugs me more than it would others. Britax is generally good and that's really my only two complaints about the car seat. Other than that, it seems to work well which is why I'd say go with the regular Boulevard.

"Good seat, but has major design flaw" 2009-12-13
    By M. Hendricks
We've been pretty happy with the seat up until now. My son has been in this car seat for about two years. A few weeks ago, we started having problems tightening the restraints/buckles. After examining the seat (keep in mind my husband is an engineer) we saw a place behind the seat where the belt catches on an exposed metal piece, which makes it difficult to completely tighten the child restraint.

Since safety is the reason we paid $$$ for this seat, I feel short-changed. What good are all the safety features and ratings if I can't tighten the belt?

I'm currently on-line trying to find out if anyone else has had this problem. My next step is to contact the company.

     "Phenomenal Seat!" 2010-02-03
    By Kevin Illing
My daughter outgrew her infant carrier by weight before she was 5 months old so we switched her to the Britax Boulevard RF. At around 14 months, she could not longer fit RF so we did FF and have never looked back. She loves the seat and I love the safety and convenience it provides. Even at 3 years old, she still falls asleep in the car; I would too if I had a seat this comfortable!

    Pros:

The side Impact panels prevent her head from flopping all over the place, seat cover is easy to remove and washes great, built solid, fabric is good quality, harness easy to adjust for bulky winter coats and do not have to unhook the seat, head support easy to move up and down. Install is pretty simple once you get use to it (takes me about 2 minutes now),recline is simple, plush and very padded.

Cons: I will agree with Abigail on the EPS,its flimsy for such an important feature.. I accidentally cracked it while removing the cover to clean (called Britax and they replaced it free of charge) and the seta itself is VERY Bulky and heavy so buy another seat when you travel. Also no cup holders but maybe thats not so bad if it keeps my car clean.

Lastly, yes this seat is expensive, but well worth it for the safety and great features. I really have just minor complaints, I like the company and their costumer service and we love this seat. Would buy again in a heartbeat!

"Beware of small and mid-sized cars" 2010-01-07
By M. Figueroa (Washington, DC Metro)
This is a great seat. It seems incredibly comfortable and has the added flaps that prevent my 7 month-old from drooping her head too much to the side (though, my 6 year-old never experienced any issues from the lack of flaps on her old Marathon model, so I'm not convinced that the flaps are important).

My biggest complaint is how large this seat is. In my Mazda 3, the thing is an absolute beast in reverse orientation. I can't move the front seat back to a comfortable driving position with this seat behind me. It's also very high, to the point where it's actually difficult to load the 7 month-old in without hitting her head on the roof of the car (especially with the flaps). In eyeballing the difference between this and the Roundabout (purchased at the same time), I'm pretty sure that I would have similar problems in my minivan.

That said, I prefer mounting this seat over the Roundabout. It has two strong metal bars on either side that have the belt buckles attached, making moving the seat around and tightening the buckles a bit easier, especially when changing its orientation. I always scratch my hands fumbling with the belt in the Roundabout, which uses a single belt system that passes under the cushion with two latches on either side.
