I like to think that I'm pretty technically competent, but there were a couple details on this car seat that had me baffled. The first was the manual. It is attached to the seat by a lanyard. That is good; except that I couldn't figure out how to detach it so I could use it while I'm installing the seat. That made for some awkward reaching as I was trying to put install in the rear facing configuration. In my Honda CRV I couldn't figure out a way to install the tether in the rear facing configuration without making it very difficult to get our 7 month old in and out of the seat. The tether vees from the back of the seat and goes back to the rear of the vehicle. I'm sure some cars have an anchor in front of the rear seat for the tether, but mine does not and it is highest safety rated vehicle in its class. After installing the seat per the instructions and taking a few rides, we found that our daughters head slumped awkwardly forward or sideways when she fell asleep. I couldn't adjust the reclining seat any further back (towards the front of the car), so I had to roll a towel and place it under the base of the seat to allow it to angle enough to keep her head in place. We also had to add an infant support to cradle her head. This seat does not come with one despite being rated for infants.
As my daughter has gotten a little bigger and we have made adjustments, the seat is working well. It is a large seat. If you have a small car and need the front seats pushed back for leg room, this seat may not work for you. I'm 5'8 and the Advocate touches my seat if I go one click back from my normal setting. We bought this car seat for it's outstanding safety rating. I can't speak to the validity of that rating, but if it lives up to that rating that is all that matters.

Everyone has rather thoroughly explained the pros and cons of the seat, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. So I'll spare you ALL the details.
One thing I don't see mentioned is the top tether, which straps to the floor and keeps the seat from flying upwards in case of a short-stop. I don't know if this is now standard on all car seats (this is my first car seat in 13 years) but it impressed me. The seat does not budge at all in my car - and only took about five minutes to install (unlike the infant carrier, which never seemed to be installed properly and took several hours and adults to finally throw their hands in the air and give up - btw, that's the Cosco brand and came with a stroller that is impossible to steer and falling apart after less than 10 uses).
And for those of you worried about size, the seat (even fully reclined and rear-facing) fits PERFECTLY in the center of my backseat, without causing discomfort to the driver and passenger (because they have to sit squashed up to the console). I have a Toyota Camry, so this gives you some idea of size. The seat is, however, quite bulky, which means that squeezing two people in the back with the seat might be a stretch. Guess it's time to lose that babyfat!
Also, if you are concerned about looks - be warned that those white "wings" are HUGE. I'm not concerned about the fact that the seat doesn't match my interior, I'm worried about how easy it is to spot in the back seat and identify as an insanely expensive car seat (something I hope not too many thiefs are keen on). You can find a good deal for the seat on the Internet, I got mine for less than $300 - including tax and shipping.
If you do buy the seat and look for a cover to protect it, I can recommend the Dressy Dribbles toddler-sized seat cover (sold on Amazon through Target). It's soft and will wrap around the headrest (it even has a hole for the click safe). Once the headrest is at the topmost position, I doubt it will fit. Another handy tip, Safety First makes a shade for strollers, I find you can tuck it around the headrest to block sun that comes in through the rear window (I have a five month old, not yet able to rip it down). This helps some.

We have only ever bought Britax car seats and been extremely pleased however with this car seat it has been a nightmare to adjust the straps. Once my son is in the seat, you cannot pull the straps out to loosen them in order to adjust them appropriately. I have pulled on them with all my strength (and I am a strong mom) and I cannot get the straps to loosen or even tighten. My baby boy has actually cried since it has taken too long to try to get them correct. Watch out. It's the worst!

Let's talk about comfort. My 15-month old daughter cannot tell you why she likes this seat, but I can tell you that she loves it and, for that reason, we love it too. In the past three months, we have taken two very long trips in our car - trips in excess of 700 miles each way (so, that's four 700+ mile trips) and we have had nary a complaint from her (or our other child, in the diplomat, for that matter). She slept long; she slept well; she rode without complaint or discomfort for hours on end (yes, we made stops, but 14 hours in a car is a long time for a little one - regardless of how you break it up). The seat gives her the cushioning to be comfortable and cozy, but also the good support where she needs it for her little body to enjoy extended seat-time and the ventilation to not be too hot. Having our kids comfortable on a long-haul trip is invaluable in reducing the strain of a long trip on everyone in the vehicle, and I also think it is very telling of the comfort they experience on the short-haul trips as well.
Yes, this seat is a giant. We also own a Britax Diplomat Convertible Car Seat Onyx and the Advocate essentially dwarfs it. The side impact cushions (my wife calls them pontoons) are substantial and take up a lot of space. If you were doing a lot of short haul and taking your kids in and out, the size of the seat may raise ease of access issues - but it has not been a bother for us. I could go on for a bit about safety and whatnot, but the safety factor is fairly indisputable. How much of a margin do the pontoons add? I really don't know - but I can tell you that whatever seat you end up choosing, a Britax is worth the cost.

We purchased this car seat for my 6 month old.
We also have a Britax Decathlon and wanted to stick with a trusted brand.
At first I was a little overwhelmed by the size. Once I put it in my car It fit perfect.
Yes its big but all Britax car seats are. It is built really well and very sturdy.
I have a Mazda CX7 and the backseat is not very big but the carseat fits great !
