You have to have one of these for a newborn. They are just too tiny to put properly in the car seat or stroller. Yes, the baby can get a bit hot -- but if I have to chose between a little hot and flopping around in the car seat, I would go with this. It works really well -- The best I have seen. I've loaned this to friends to use for their babies.
The only negative is that the baby's head can still seem a little floppy. Perhaps you need pads for the straps? I think I will try that with this baby. Also, don't buy pink lined if you plan on having another kid. I bought this last baby at a discount store that only had pink, but we are having a boy this time. Obviously not going to buy a new one, but wish I had a neutral color -- not that my newborn will care one way or the other (though perhaps he will at 15 when he is in pink for half of his baby pictures:).

This is our third baby and our third attempt to find a car seat support system that works. This one by far is better than all the others we have tried. It is no way near as flimsy or thin as the others!!!
GOOD:
* It is thicker than any other we have found and so soft! I seriously want one for myself :)
* It covers way more space than most
* It is easy to place and fits our Graco car seat with no problems
* Easy to clean
BAD:
* It does shift sometimes when we pick her up but we have found that they all shift so we can't hold that against them, and honestly... it shifts way less than the others we have owned.
* It is thicker than all the other ones we have purchased which is good and bad since it does get hotter that the other kinds.

product does what it's supposed to -- it supports the head and body. However, the baby does seem to sweat in it and it does not stay put over time. Whenever I pick the baby up, the entire thing shifts, and quality of the entire item is flimsy. For the price I think it's a fair deal though. You wouldn't be wasting money, but it's not all thumbs up.
