"Great for the beginning, tight for the end" 2010-01-18
By K. Hays (Spangdahlem AFB, DE United States)
I loved this carseat in the beginning and was happy to see that it had a higher weight limit. Knowing I have children who plump up the first year made spending the money more bearable. Instead of using an infant carrier for 3 or 4 months I was able to use it for 9 months and only stopped because of 1 reason: the strapes!! Honestly my daughter was 28"/22lbs when I finally admitted that I couldn't use the seat anymore. The strapes just cut into her shoulders too much and they were so tight, using it in winter was impossible. Why would Graco make a seat for higher heights/weights and not accommidate these larger sizes in the design? Also when is Graco going to realize clip/hook style latch attachments are super hard to use. if your latch bars are deep in your seats it is very difficult to install and don't even think about removing them until your ready to get rid of the car or seat. You'll have to squeeze and twist the LATCH hooks to get them out.

As for all those who complain about lugging a 20+ lb baby around. NO ONE DOES! Common sense tells you to leave the seat in the car rear facing for as long as you would like up to 32lbs, regardless if your child is past one years old. When your ready to turn the toddler around you buy a combination seat, not a convertable(RF,FF,B) or 3-n-1, that is a foward facing seat and belt positioning booster only like the Graco Natilus. This was my plan until I realized that using the Snugride 32 wouldn't be comfortable for my daughter between 9-12+ months. so sad to have to switch.

"My baby despises this carseat." 2010-01-09
By Happy reader (Austin, TX United States)
My baby cannot stand this carseat! She's 5 months old now and screams whenever we put her in it. We started using it when she was a tiny baby and she has never cared for it at all. I think part of the problem is that it jams the baby into a pretty uncomfortable looking position. It's not a soft recline, but the baby is mashed into a C-shape - very hunched. The straps and buckles are not convenient to use at all. The design and user-friendliness could use some major work. For example, the straps flop everywhere and get stuck under her when I'm trying to put her in. The seat is decent looking, but there are warning labels plastered all over it. Should have spent the extra money on a Peg-Perego.

Also, Graco claims that the carseat can fit the baby up to 32 pounds. Who's going to carry around a 32-lb baby in a 10-lb carseat? That's 42 lbs of weight on your arm! My baby's only 15 pounds and is already getting too heavy to carry her this way. Even my husband who is very strong comments that it's cumbersome and heavy already.

"Snugride 32 way too snug" 2010-01-06
By nr danilow (By the sea)
I had a baby in July 2009. I purchased the Snugride 32 beforehand after doing a lot of research. I read other people's opinions and, based on their thoughts, concluded that it would be best to purchase the 32 because I would be able to use it for one year or up to 32 pounds. This logic was faulty for several reasons, which I will outline below. Before I do that, a little background: I have a big baby. He is 6 months and already over 20 pounds. I had a feeling he might be big, which is why I bought this seat. However, the seat is almost at the end of its life already after only 6 months and 20+ pounds. Here's why:

1. The straps are way too short. My son was maxed out within the first couple of months. Why don't they make the straps longer? Why isn't there another setting or two for height? It is a very tight fit. We live in New England and it is now winter and we cannot put him in there with a couple of layers on. We will have to switch to a convertible car seat very soon.

2. There is no way you'd want to carry a baby much larger than 20 pounds in his car seat. You would never use this product up to 32 pounds for this reason. You need a stationary seat anyway once the baby reaches about 20 pounds.

Another major problem with the Rittenhouse model in particular is the lack of head support for an infant. Our baby's head was always flopped to the side. I am giving the seats two stars because it looks nice (I have the Rittenhouse and get many compliments on the nice black and white pattern), seems to work fine and was comfortable for the baby in the first few months. He especially liked it when he was a newborn but he seems cramped now.

We are tight with money right now (who isn't?) and feel that the 32 was a bit of a waste of money. You can purchase a regular [and more lightweight] Snugride for a lower price and use it for the first 3-6 months and then switch over to a convertible seat. If you have a big baby, you will have to do this anyway, whether you buy the 32 or not because the 32 can't accommodate a very large baby. While it is admittedly very useful to have a carrier car seat for a newborn, it becomes much less necessary after 3-6 months. Convertible car seats can face rear so you don't have to worry about compromising your baby's safety.

Unless you only care about style and not price or practicality, I would recommend saving a few bucks and getting the regular Snugride or some other inexpensive but functional carrier seat for the first few months and investing in a good convertible seat for later on.

"Great Carseat - safety first" 2010-01-05
By GeoKids (United States)
I received this car seat as a gift so wanted to wait until we'd had a chance to test it out before writing a review. Our DD is now 2 months old, and was 7lbs 10oz, 20", at birth. First of all, some of the reviews comment the the base does not seem secure. Please take your car seat to your local Fire Dept and get that fixed!! The base is very secure and can be tightened down really well. We were unsure as to how to do this, but after 15 minutes with a trained fireman it was perfect. We have since taken the base out and put it back in with no trouble.

Pros:

-For the money you can use this car seat for a long time. I didn't want to have to buy an entirely new system at 6 mo. Also, it's safest to have your baby in a rear facing seat until 1 year; this was the number one reason we registered for this seat.

-The seat locks in easily to the base and is very secure. This is important because I am not the strongest person in the world and have back problems. The last thing I want to do is fight with a car seat with my DD in it.

-The car seat isn't too heavy. As mentioned above, this was very important to me because of my back problems. I needed a car seat that I could carry and get in and out of the car without lots of struggling. I don't think I will be taking it in and out once she gets to 20 lbs, let alone 32 lbs, but at 10 lbs I am able to get her in and out without a struggle and without waking her up.

-Easy to clean. The fabric is easy to wipe off and clean. This is important if you have exploding diapers or spit up.

-Holds up well in the rain. I was happy to find that the visor is water proof so I don't have to worry about my DD getting too wet when getting in and out of the car in the rain.

-The harness system is very easy to use and feels very secure. This was something else that the fireman showed us how to use. I love that I can just pull a single strap to tighten. To keep the shoulder straps even, loosen by pulling the clip before unclipping to remove your baby. This ensures that both sides loosen the same amount.

-My DD falls asleep fairly easily in the car seat, which is wonderful. We just took a long road trip (~30 hours in the car total) this past month for the holidays and she did very well in it. We have not had any trouble with her overheating in the car seat; she generally seems comfortable. Of course, we don't over dress her...

-The car seat fits perfectly in the Graco SnugRider Infant Car Seat Stroller Frame, which is perfect for removing a sleeping baby and putting her in a stroller without waking her up.

Cons:

-I sometimes have trouble getting the seat unlatched from the base. This took me a bit of practice. That said, DD has never woken up during the jostling.

-The size. This is a big car seat (because it can be used for so long). We have it in the middle of the backseat in our Suburu Outback. We can still sit one adult comfortably in the back seat with the car seat, but not two. If we put the car seat to one side, we have to move the front seat forward, which is a little uncomfortable for the front seat passenger. However, the safest place for the car seat is in the middle away from the side airbags.

I would definitely get this car seat again and recommend it to all of my friends.

"Great Product! Have a Preemie?" 2010-01-03
By J. Baldwin (California, USA)
We took our Preemie twin girls home when they were around 6 lbs. This car seat worked great for them. We added an additional head piece though that you can buy from Eddie Bauer. Now the 32's make it so you don't have as much room in the front seats. I had to sit my driver's seat straight up and pull the seat forward a bit to make room for the extra length of the 32's. It's a much bigger car seat than the regular snugrides, but I like it better...more protection it would seem. Installation is a breeze with the latch system. The 32's are heavier than the regular snugrides, but it's not too bad for us, but we are strong people. If you're little, I wouldn't get this one.
